Basically, yes you can specify the Maximum number of posts on the main page by going to Settings > Posts & Comments. However, as soon as your thumbnails and preview text exceeds the 500kb limit, all subsequent posts will be bumped to the next page. Sometimes only 4 will show up, sometimes 9… not way to tell.
